Developing innovation By Françoise Mercadal-Delasalles

Clearly we’re entering a period of slower economic growth. But ironically, it also should turn out to be a period of incredible growth, as methods of consuming and communication, society’s aspirations, and the limitations of our environment continue to change. Faced with these changes, as well as ever-increasing competition, innovation is becoming more crucial than ever for companies in all sectors, perhaps even more so in banking.

It’s not just innovation for innovation’s sake. The kind of innovation we’re talking about should be kept simple. No more incomprehensible innovations! In the field of banking and finance, you have to admit, keeping things simple is a challenge in itself. The very notion has kept us busy with considerable brainstorming and workshops throughout the Societe Generale group, in order to change the way we work.

This is why we see innovation as one of our basic levers for development. It should allow us to provide services that are more relevant, of better quality, and that make use of more suitable technology.

This is the spirit we would like to flow throughout the company. Innovation is one of the Group’s Resources that I am in charge of. This was the basis for our bringing together a range of skills and initiatives, to form a kind of laboratory for experimentation in which new ideas can take shape. The aim is to reinforce our existing systems in the Group, such as our network of participative innovation. We want to remain open to all sorts of inspirations.

This begins with you.
Regardless of whether you’re a customer, partner or employee, ask yourself which bank do you want in a one, five, ten, or even twenty years’ time? What products and services can make Societe Generale a more useful bank that is closer to your needs and makes your life easier? This blog is your chance to let us know. Let’s get inspired together!

  • Developing innovation by Nathaniel | The 07/14/2010 Innovation on our part can be used as a tool for profitable competitive advantage. This is because all banks are basically offering the same products & services, however, innovation will make our products and services stand out so we can win more customers.
One way of stimulating innovation from our colleagues is to institute periodic 'innovate and win' competitions, where staff can submit their ideas and subsequently, the best ideas will implemented and duly rewarded.
Innovation is not the best way to stay on top, it is the only way to stay on top.
  • Simplicity by Mukta Arya | The 04/30/2011 I completely agree with the ideology that innovations are not complex, incomprehensible craetions, but simple day-to-day things which all of us can implement (in order to be more effective, efficient, competitive etc) starting by looking at a situation, process etc from a different angle. It's a way of thinking and really leaving our comfort zones behind.
