Since 2007, as we are aware of the environmental impact, we have set a target of being carbon neutral by 2012. To reach this target, we will have to reduce emissions per occupant by 11% between 2008 and 2011 and offset residual emissions.
Regarding the reduction in its carbon emissions, we are on the right track. Data relating to 94% of the Group’s scope (excluding Rosbank) shows that we reduced CO2 emissions by 3.5% between 2007 and 2008 (see key figures).
At the same time, we have instigated a programme to offset residual emissions. Following a successful experience by our Luxembourg subsidiaries, Société Générale Bank & Trust (SGBT) and Euro-VL, in 2008, we are extending the scope of our CO2 emission-reduction policy to central services buildings in France in 2009. Via our Orbeo subsidiary, we are financing a CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) methane-collection project in an Argentinean landfill. All in all, close to 10% of the carbon emissions of the our central services buildings and Luxembourg subsidiaries will be offset this year.
The carbon-offset scope will gradually be extended in years to come. Through these actions, we are reaffirming our ambition to make the battle against climate change the major line of our environmental policy.
Some key figures:
- Targeted reduction in emissions: 11% by 2012
- Group consumption in 2008:
- 850 GWh of electricity and heating, or 6,503 kWh per occupant;
- 1.5 million m3 of drinking water, or 15 m3 per occupant;
- 7,600 tonnes of paper, or 58.4 kg per occupant;
- 470 million km travelled by staff, or 3,585 km per occupant ;
- Total emissions: the equivalent of 294,372 tonnes of CO 2, or 2.24 tonnes per occupant.
- Reduction in emissions between 2007 and 2008: 3.5%
- 2009 offsetting of 2008 emissions: 28,840 tonnes
