For several years, Societe Generale has invested in banking education and seeks to contribute to making the financial system more accessible to children. Focused on specific content and a fun and educational module for managing pocket money that is one-of-a-kind, abcbanque.fr is designed as a tool that will grow with kids.
Money management starts at 6 years of age...
Birthdays, Christmas, the tooth fairy...there are ample opportunities for young children to fill their piggy banks. A study carried out in September 2010 by PlayBac Panel revealed that kids now manage their money at a very early age*. Back in the day, an allowance was just for teenagers - to pay for going out or travel expenses - but today it is not uncommon (30% of households) for primary schoolchildren to receive pocket money.
It is no longer taboo for the family to discuss money - in fact it happens regularly. Nine children out of ten have a bank account before the age of eleven. The vast majority of them (79%) even manage their money wisely and cautiously, with a view to spending it in the future on larger projects.
Abcbanque.fr was designed to be a source of information and learning for families as they impart a financial education on their young children. On the website, parents will find suggestions on how to bring up the subject of money with their children; fun and insightful resources are also available. Designed by experts in childhood education, banking and the Internet, all abcbanque.fr content is appropriate for children six and up.
Amusing and pedagogical activities so kids can learn while having fun
Guided by Hector the beaver, children can participate in several types of activities:
• Games like "The counterfeiter" for recognising fake money, "The price escalator" for ranking household products from least to most expensive and "Buying on a budget" for calculating what you can buy given a certain sum of money
• Educational videos from mints that show how money is made. How does an ATM machine work?
• The dictionary offers simple and clear definitions to words related to money. Each day, a word from the dictionary is featured on the home page.
• The mini-account is a personal page on which children can learn to manage their pocket money efficiently: deposits, withdrawals, how much money needs to be saved for making a big purchase, spending timetable… everything kids need to manage money just like mum and dad!
*Source: Online survey, distributed by PlayBac Panel, 3,000 households with at least one child between 6 and 10 years of age were contacted and 1,345 responded. Some 96%of respondents agreed to have their child participate in the second part of the questionnaire in order to find out what kids think about money. September 2010.
